McKinney-Vento Act: Support for Students Experiencing Housing Instability

Ensuring every student has access to a stable, supportive educationโ€”regardless of housing circumstances.

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

  • Federal law protecting students experiencing homelessness

  • Ensures immediate enrollment and school stability

  • Applies to both children and unaccompanied youth

Who Qualifies?

Students may qualify if they are:

  • Lacking a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence

  • Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camping grounds due to lack of

    alternative accommodations

  • Staying in emergency or transitional shelters

  • Abandoned in hospitals or awaiting foster care placement

  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard

    housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings

Student Rights

  • Immediate enrollment (no documents required)

  • Stay at school of origin if in best interest

  • Transportation support

  • Access to all programs and activities

Support Services

  • Academic support & tutoring

  • Counseling

  • School supplies & uniforms

  • Coordination with housing resources

How Are Students Identified?

Students may be identified through:

  • Online registration (Infinite Campus)

  • Family or student self-identification at any time

Dispute Resolution

If there is a disagreement regarding eligibility or services:

  • Written explanation will be provided

  • Families have the right to appeal

  • Student remains enrolled during the process
